Ripon Ends Season On Positive Note

RIPON, Wis. - The Red Hawks' softball season couldn't have ended much better, as they won both games of a doubleheader against Knox Sunday afternoon in what was the final games of the season for both teams. Ripon won the first game 6-5 in walk-off fashion, before breathing a little easier with a 9-1 five-inning victory in game two.

The first game saw Knox (1-33, 1-19 MWC) strike first with a run in the top of the second. Ripon (4-31, 4-15 MWC) matched that with a run in the bottom of that frame, before the Prairie Fire scored three runs on four hits in the third, but left three players on base.

The score would remain 4-1 until the bottom of the fifth when Ripon scored on a Knox fielding error. Both teams scored a run in the sixth inning, sending the Red Hawks into the bottom of the seventh trailing 5-3. The Red Hawks quickly rallied in that final inning, which saw Melanie Kobelt drive in a run to cut the lead to one, before Stephanie Cartwright tied it with a single up the middle. That set the stage for Rebeccah Jones, who delivered a pinch-hit RBI double to give Ripon the victory.

Cartwright finished 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Kobelt and Casey O'Malley each finished with two hits. Lexi Reetz (2-13) earned the win, recording a career-high 11 strikeouts, giving her 89 for the season, which ranks ninth in school history for a single season.

Knox finished with nine hits, with three coming from Emily Stevenson. Alannah Sanchez (1-17) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on 13 hits in 6.1 innings.

In the second game of the day, Ripon didn't wait nearly as long to light up the scoreboard, plating five runs in the bottom of the first. Kobelt singled in the first two runs of the game, while Haylea Hoskins singled in two more and Cartwright scored on a passed ball.

After Knox scored their only run in the top of the fourth, Ripon put the game away with a four-run fifth. Jones led that inning off with a single and would later score on an RBI single by Reetz. Tene Robinson also drove in a run in the inning, while Kobelt ended the game with a two-run double to left center.

Kobelt finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI, which is tied for seventh in school history for a single game. Jones and Renee Packer also finished with two hits apiece. Jessica Kobelt (1-5) pitched a gem, allowing one run on six hits and recording a career-high seven strikeouts.

Sanchez led Knox with two hits, while Stevenson scored the Prairie Fire's only run. Kristen Koviekis (0-16) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits and striking out two in 4.2 innings of work.
