RIPON, Wis. - For the second time in as many games, Marian has defeated the Red Hawks. Their latest loss came Wednesday afternoon, as the Sabres won 11-5, out-hitting the Red Hawks 15-9.
Despite the loss, Ripon (9-22) came out of the gates swinging a hot bat. The Red Hawks opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by
Nick Schmitt, who gave them a 5-1 lead with a two-run double in the following inning. That gives Schmitt 50 career doubles, which moves him into second in school history, just four shy of the school record with at least four games still to play in this, his senior season.
Ripon's lead lasted until the fourth when Marian (10-28) scored five runs on five hits. The Sabres scored on an RBI single, a bases loaded walk, followed by a hit batsman, and a two-run single to take their first lead of the contest. Marian added another run on a sac fly in the seventh, before putting the game away with a four-run ninth.
The Red Hawks were led by Schmitt,
Isiah Ramos and
Brice Swick, who each finished with two hits. Ramos also scored a team-high two runs.
Nick Henning (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits and striking out three in four innings of work.
The Red Hawks will be in action again Thursday in what will be the beginning of their final four-game conference set against conference-leading Beloit. If Ripon wins all four of those games against the Buccaneers, they will host the 2016 Midwest Conference Tournament, while winning three of the four games will clinch a spot in the MWC Tournament at De Pere. If Ripon splits the four games with Beloit, the Red Hawks would be eliminated from postseason contention. Thursday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. at Francis Field in Ripon.
