Red Hawks Split Doubleheader; Eliminated From Postseason Contention

BELOIT, Wis. - For just the third time in the last 21 years, the Midwest Conference Tournament will not include Ripon College. Needing to win both games of Sunday's doubleheader at Beloit in order to qualify for the tournament for the fourth consecutive season, the Red Hawks lost the first game 10-0 in seven innings, before winning the nightcap, 16-8.

The day's first game was all Beloit (24-12, 10-6 MWC North). The Buccaneers broke a scoreless tie in the second inning on a sacrifice bunt, before breaking the game wide open with eight runs on eight hits and a Ripon error in the third. The game's only other run came in the sixth on an RBI single from Beloit's Ryan Kaveney.

The Red Hawks (11-24, 9-7 MWC North) finished with four hits, coming off the bat of Nick Kita, Isiah Ramos, Josh Oswald and Michael Barnes. Matt Hecht (1-5) suffered the loss, despite allowing just two earned runs, while striking out two in 2.1 innings.

Beloit's 15 hits came from eight different players, while all nine batters in the lineup recorded at least one RBI and eight players scored at least one run. Jeremy Dutton and Kam Sallee combined to go 7-for-7 with three runs and two RBI. Austin Padjen (5-3) earned the win, pitching a seven inning complete game shutout, while striking out four and walking one.

Ripon's bats finally came alive in the second game, as they finished with 16 runs on 17 hits, getting out to an early lead with a five-run third inning. In that frame, Oswald did most of the damage with a grand slam, his fifth home run of the season. The Red Hawks added another run in the fourth on an RBI single from Randy Finger and four more in the fifth on a two-run double by Cullen Oren, a run-scoring single by Kita and a sac fly off the bat of Finger.

Beloit finally got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Ripon got two of those runs back in the sixth thanks to one RBI apiece from Barnes and Kita. The Buccaneers attempted to mount a comeback with five runs in the seventh, but Ripon put the game away with four runs of their own in the eighth.

Ripon's hits came from eight different players, with seven recording more than one. Kita led the way by going 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Brice Swick (3-4) earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out three in five innings.

Beloit finished with nine hits, led by two from Sallee. Jamie Huntley (3-3) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in 2.1 innings of work.

The Red Hawks will wrap up their season on Tuesday with a single nine-inning game against Wisconsin Lutheran, beginning at 4 p.m. at Francis Field in Ripon.
