Ripon's women's tennis team picked up their first win of 2016 Saturday, defeating Monmouth College 8-1. That came after losing 6-3 to Knox earlier in the day.
Against Monmouth, Ripon (1-5, 1-1 MWC) won all six of their singles matches. Maddie VandenHouten won at the top flight, 7-5, 6-3, while
Morgan Makar and
Samantha Kiesner won at the second and third flights by scores of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-0, respectively.
Carly Wesner also won her number four singles match 6-1, 6-2, while Madeline Salzer and
Katelyn Peroutka won at the fifth and sixth positions by scores of 6-3, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-0, respectively. In doubles play, Kiesner and Wesner teamed up to win at the number two flight by a score of 8-0, while Madeline Salzer and
Lily Lenk won their third flight match 8-3.
Earlier in the day, Ripon saw some success in a 6-3 loss to Knox. In that match, Makar won at number two singles, 1-6, 6-3, 10-5, while also teaming with VandenHouten at number one doubles to win 8-8, 7-5. Wesner and Kiesner were also victorious in doubles play at the second flight, winning 8-5.
Ripon will look for win number two on Sunday at Illinois College. That match will begin at 9 a.m. in Jacksonville, Ill.
