RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon women's soccer team hasn't allowed a goal in 374 minutes, a span of four-plus games. Their latest shutout came Wednesday afternoon in a 3-0 win against Marian University, improving their record to 5-0, which is the best start to a season in program history.
After a scoreless first period, freshman
Abbie Maule notched her first collegiate goal in the 54th minute off a corner kick. Three minutes later, the Red Hawks found the back of the net once again on
Paige Birschbach's team-leading ninth goal of the year, scoring on a header off an assist from another Maule corner kick. Birschbach capped the scoring with her second goal of the game seven minutes later via Penalty Kick.
"It was a tale of two halves today," Head Coach
Sam Schroeder said. "We didn't have our best stuff in the first half, but played much better in the second period, especially when Abbie broke open the scoring. After that first goal, we really found our identity and got back to our game."
Freshman Goal Keeper
Miye Aoki-Kramer continued the unbelievable start to her collegiate career with her fourth consecutive shutout between the pipes, extending her season scoreless streak to 418 minutes without a goal allowed. Aoki-Kramer recorded seven saves on Wednesday, giving her 27 on the season.
The Red Hawks took eight corner kicks in the game, including seven in the second half, while Marian managed just one. Ripon also out-shot the Sabres 17-9, including a 10-5 margin in the second period.
Ripon will try to improve to 6-0 on Sunday when they'll travel to Northland College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. in Ashland, Wis. and can be seen live atÂ
