LAKE FOREST, Ill. - It took Ripon's men's basketball team one half of play to find their groove Saturday afternoon, but when they did, there was nothing stopping them from improving their overall record to 10-1 for the first time since the 1997-98 season. Trailing by eight at halftime, the Red Hawks outscored Lake Forest 53-28 in the second half, en route to an 80-63 win over the Foresters to remain undefeated in the Midwest Conference (6-0) and in a first place tie in the MWC standings. That marks their best start to a conference season since that 1997-98 season, which ended with a 13-0 mark in the MWC.
Lake Forest (5-6, 3-3 MWC) scored the first five points of the game, with Ripon's first points coming nearly four minutes into the contest. The Foresters led for the first 12 minutes until a
Brendan McCoy jumper gave Ripon (10-1, 6-0 MWC) the a lead, which lasted just one minute. Lake Forest finished the half on a 19-10 run to take a 35-27 lead into the locker room.
After shooting just 36 percent (10-28) in the first half, Ripon converted 63 percent (17-27) of their second half shots, including 80 percent (8-10) of their 3-pointers.
Ty Sabin gave Ripon the lead on a three-point play with just over 13 minutes remaining, which was the beginning of a 34-16 run by the Red Hawks to end the game.
Sabin led all scorers with 30 points, with 28 of those coming in the second half, while also making three 3-pointers and pulling down eight rebounds. McCoy added 11 points, while making all three of his 3-point attempts. Elliott Hoerdemann also made a trio of 3-pointers, finishing with nine points.
Lake Forest was led by Jim Schick's 14 points and 12 rebounds. Danny Sotos and Eric Porter each chipped in with 12 points apiece.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Friday when they'll host Monmouth College at 7:30 p.m. in Ripon. That game will also serve as Ripon's Alzheimer's Awareness Day, where all fans in attendance are asked to wear purple to help raise awareness for Alzheimer's.
