Ripon Loses Defensive Battle

RIPON, Wis. - One week after Ripon's defense pitched a shutout in a 55-0 win against Grinnell, the Red Hawks were on the other end of a shutout, losing their annual Homecoming game 17-0 against St. Norbert. The two teams combined for just 353 yards of total offense, with each team limited to less than 100 yards rushing.

After a scoreless first quarter, St. Norbert (3-2, 1-0 MWC) broke into the scoring column with a 27-yard field goal by Spenser Thompson-Meyers two minutes into the second quarter, capping a six-play, 20-yard drive. Neither team could muster much offense after that, combining for 55 yards on the next seven possessions combined.

St. Norbert added to their lead in the third quarter, scoring the game's first touchdown on a 32-yard pass from Jack Becker to Matt Galanopoulos, which capped a three-play, 44-yard drive. Both offenses continued to be stifled into the fourth quarter, but St. Norbert was able to put the game away on a three-yard touchdown pass from Becker to Samuel Staehling with five minutes remaining.

Ripon (1-4, 0-1 MWC) was led by Brent Anderson's 38 yards on two carries, including the Red Hawks' biggest play of the game, a 27-yard scamper. Tyler VanDeVelde added 27 yards, while Julian Patton rushed for 21 yards.

Ripon's defense was stout all day, led by Armando Mosqueda's career-high 11 tackles (eight solo), with two going for a loss. The Red Hawks recorded three sacks, with Lane Barnes, Brandon Bartel, and Ethan Hoffman doing the honors. That gives Bartel 16.5 career sacks, which is just 0.5 shy of the school record.

St. Norbert was led by Elijah Fort's 48 yards on 13 carries. Becker completed 16-of-29 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns, while Staehling led the Green Knights with six receptions for 39 yards.

The Red Hawks will try to bounce back next weekend when they'll travel to Beloit College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. in Beloit, Wis. and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
