Ripon Loses To Loras In Final Seconds

DUBUQUE, Iowa - In a game that featured seven ties and 11 lead changes, Ripon lost in dramatic fashion Saturday night, as Loras defeated the Red Hawks 90-88 on a last-second shot. The Red Hawks shot 54 percent (32-59) from the field, including 41 percent (7-17) from 3-point range, while Loras converted 51 percent (31-61) of their shots and 42 percent (10-24) from long range.

Ripon (2-1) came out firing, scoring the game's first five points and 12 of the game's first 14 to take a 10-point lead just two minutes and 20 seconds into the contest. Loras (3-1) answered with a 13-2 run to take their first lead of the game with 14 minutes left in the half. After the lead changed hands a couple times, Ripon took a six-point lead on a 3-pointer by Cal Schultz with 38 seconds remaining, but Ryan DiCanio cut that lead in half just before the break with a 3-pointer of his own.

Loras scored the first seven points of the second half to take a four point lead with 17 and a half minutes to play. The Duhawks would take their largest lead of seven with 10 and a half minutes left, but that was answered by nine consecutive Ripon points in the next two minutes. Loras would then grab the lead again and would lead by five with one minute and 20 seconds remaining before Ripon made one final run. A three-point play by Trent Jones cut the lead to three with just over one minute remaining and Schultz would tie the game at 88 on a 3-pointer with seven seconds to play. That euphoria was short-lived as Loras' Jake Toman scored on a drive to the hoop with one second on the clock, giving the Duhawks the victory.

Schultz finished with a career-high 28 points for the Red Hawks, making 11-of-15 shots, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Isaac Masters also recorded a career-high with 19 points, as he converted 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Tyler Semenas added 14 points, while Jones and Koy Brecklin each scored 10. Jones also recorded four steals and two blocked shots.

Loras was led by 37 points off the bench from Josh Ruggles, who converted 11-of-14 shots, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range and 10-of-13 from the free throw line. DiCanio added 16 points, while Tomas finished with 11 and six rebounds.

Ripon will try to rebound on Friday when they'll host Monmouth College in their first conference game of the season. That contest will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Ripon and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
