WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. - UW-Platteville shot 48 percent (29-61) from the field, including 52 percent (15-29) in the second half, en route to a 78-58 win over Ripon's men's basketball team Friday night on the first day of the JustAGame Fieldhouse Classic. The Pioneers never trailed in the game, which featured just two ties, both coming in the first half.
UW-Platteville (9-1) got out to an early 8-2 lead before Ripon (4-4) battled back to tie the score at eight with six consecutive points. The Pioneers answered with an 18-4 run to take a commanding 26-12 advantage with five and a half minutes remaining in the first half.
After leading by 17 at halftime, UW-Platteville continued that momentum in the second half, taking a 25-point lead on a layup by Clay Gerds with 15 minutes left. The Pioneers would lead by at least 20 points the rest of the way, taking their largest lead of 28 points with four and a half minutes to play.
Ripon shot just 27 percent (7-26) in the first half, before settling down and shooting 48 percent (13-27) after halftime. They were led by Tyler Semenas' 11 points and three rebounds, while Trent Jones tied a career-high with 10 points. Cal Schultz added eight points and a career-best three assists.
Carter Voelker led UW-Platteville with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Matt Oestreich posted 12 points. Jake Schowalter and Robert Duax each added eight points, while Duax also chipped in with nine rebounds and four assists.
Ripon will be in action again on Saturday in the second and final day of the JustAGame Fieldhouse Classic in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. when they'll face UW-Oshkosh at 5 p.m. That game, which is Ripon's final non-conference game of the season, can be seen live at
