Ripon Loses Defensive Battle To Cornell

RIPON, Wis. - Ripon suffered their first conference loss of the season Saturday, losing to Cornell 46-39. The Red Hawks turned the ball over 21 times, leading to 16 Cornell points. Cornell shot just 32 percent (17-53) in the game, but the Rams held Ripon to 24 percent (14-58) shooting on the day.

The game was close throughout with each team scoring nine points in the first quarter. Cornell then got some breathing room, scoring the first seven points of the second quarter, but Ripon ended that period on an 8-4 run, as an Emma McDonald 3-pointer in the final seconds brought Ripon within three at halftime.

In the third quarter, Cornell took control of the game, ending the period on a 10-4 run to take a nine-point lead into the fourth quarter. The Rams went up by 11 in the final quarter, but Ripon hung around, cutting the lead to six on a Maggie Oimoen free throw with two minutes remaining. That's as close as Ripon would get the rest of the way however, as Cornell ended the game on a 7-6 run.

Ripon was led by Emma McDonald's 11 points and nine rebounds (four offensive), while Oimoen posted nine points and nine boards off the bench. Eleanore Mueller added eight points and eight rebounds, while Molly Cullinane posted six points and a career-high five rebounds, while making 2-of-3 shots from 3-point range. The Red Hawks out-rebounded Cornell by a 54-32 margin, including a 21-9 margin on the offensive boards.

Diamond Boyd led Cornell with a near triple-double of 14 points, 10 rebounds, and nine steals, while also recording a team-high three assists. Kandis O'Donnell added eight points and three rebounds off the bench, making all three of her field goals.

The Red Hawks will try to bounce back on Wednesday when they'll host Beloit College. That game will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Ripon, and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
