RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon College Women's Basketball team overcame a slow start Saturday afternoon to defeat Lake Forest College 62-49 to earn their fifth consecutive win, which is the longest current win streak in the Midwest Conference. That improves Ripon's conference record to 11-3 for the first time in seven years and keeps them in a tie for second place in the MWC standings.
Despite the win, the Red Hawks (13-6, 11-3 MWC) started Saturday's game slowly, missing their first six shots and turning the ball over five times during the game's first six minutes. That led to a 20-8 deficit after one quarter of play, but Ripon closed the gap to four, heading to the locker rooms down 30-26.
The second half went a lot smoother for Ripon, as they shot 41 percent (14-34) from the field after halftime, while holding the Foresters to 28 percent (7-28) shooting during that time. Ripon outscored Lake Forest 23-13 in the third quarter to take a six-point lead into the final period, which saw Ripon limit Lake Forest to just six points.
Eleanore Mueller led Ripon with 11 points and a career-high 13 rebounds off the bench for her second career double-double.
Megan Jensen also finished with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including making all three of her 3-pointers.
Nicole Herkert added 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while
Maggie Oimoen chipped in with nine points, 11 rebounds (six offensive), and three steals.
Lake Forest (5-14, 4-10 MWC) was led by Bridet Bilek's 13 points, four rebounds, and three steals, while Molly Schoenlein added eight points, five rebounds, and four blocked shots off the bench. Brie Majkowski also chipped in with seven points.
The Red Hawks will try to add to their winning streak on Wednesday when they'll host Lawrence University on what will also be Senior Night, honoring Herkert, Jensen, and Maddie Koster. That game will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Storzer Center in Ripon.
