UW-Stevens Point Holds Off Red Hawks

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - UW-Stevens Point defeated Ripon in both games of Wednesday's doubleheader, winning the first by a score of 6-1, before winning a wild game two, 15-14.

Ripon (1-10) lost the first game despite out-hitting UW-Stevens Point (7-7) by a 9-4 margin. The Pointers took the lead with a four-run third inning, with three coming on a two-out double. They added two more runs in the sixth on an RBI triple and a steal of home plate. Ripon's lone run came in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Hector Aguinaga.

The Red Hawks were led by two hits apiece from Isiah Ramos, Bennett Groves, and Robbie Schuettpelz. Brian Brown (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on just two hits and striking out two in four innings of work.

The second game of the day saw Ripon get off to a tremendous start, scoring eight runs in the top of the first on three hits and two UW-SP errors. Nick Taranto drove in the game's first run with a double to left, which was followed by a two-run triple off the bat of Michael Barnes. Groves and Ramos also drove in a run during that inning.

UW-Stevens Point slowly cut into that lead in the following innings, scoring twice in both the first and second inning, and adding another run in the third. The Pointers scored once more in the sixth, before tying the score at eight with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. UW-SP would take their first lead of the contest in the bottom of the eighth, which saw them score six runs on four hits and one error.

Despite losing the lead, Ripon didn't quit, rallying to tie the game at 14 with six runs in the top of the ninth, which saw the first seven batters reach base. Connor Gruenwald drove in a run with a bases loaded walk, while Barnes drove in two more with a double to right. Gruenwald would later score on a wild pitch, while Barnes scored on an error to cut the lead to one. The game-tying run scored on a double-play ball.

Needing one run in the bottom of the ninth to win, UW-Stevens Point got just that, drawing a lead-off walk. After a sacrifice bunt, that runner would score on a wild pitch, ending the game with one out in the inning.

Ripon's 14 runs came on seven hits, with three coming from Barnes, who was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. UW-Stevens Point finished the game with 17 hits, as five Pointers recorded a multi-hit game.

The Red Hawks will now get ready for the conference season on Saturday as they'll host Lawrence University in what will be Ripon's 2017 home opener. That doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. at Francis Field in Ripon.
