RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's softball team assured themselves of their highest win total in four years Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader split against Marian University (21-11). The Red Hawks (9-19) won the first game 1-0, before dropping the nightcap by an 8-1 margin.
Sophomore Lexi Reetz proved to be the star of the first game, striking out nine batters in the seven innings, en route to her seventh victory, and third shutout, of the season. Reetz also was responsible for the only run of the game, as she drove in
Stephanie Cartwright with a single in the bottom of the first inning, giving Ripon a 1-0 lead that they would never relinquish.
The second game saw Ripon fall behind early, with Marian scoring on an error in the top of the first. The Sabres added three more runs in the fourth, before Ripon would get on the board in the bottom of the fourth when
Ashley Parkkonen crossed the plate on a double-steal attempt. Marian would get that run back in the fifth, before capping the scoring with three more in the sixth.
Ripon finished with five hits in the second game, with two of those coming from Cartwright. Parkkonen,
Elizabeth Floodstrand, and
Tene Robinson also each collected a base knock.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Saturday when they'll travel to Monmouth College for a doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m. in Monmouth, Ill.
