RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's softball team lost both games of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon, dropping the first 3-1, before falling by a 6-1 score in the second, eliminating the Red Hawks from postseason contention.
Lake Forest (20-14, 11-5 MWC) scored first in both games, taking a 2-0 lead in the opening inning of the first contest, with just one of those runs being earned. The Red Hawks (12-22, 7-9 MWC) cut that lead in half in the bottom of the second when
Tene Robinson scored on a Lake Forest fielding error.
The Foresters would add one more run in the fifth on an RBI single to take a 3-1 lead. Ripon tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on first and second with just one out, but the next batter would hit into a double play ending the game.
Ripon out-hit the Foresters 8-6, led by two hits apiece from
Melanie Kobelt and
Maddie Koster.
Lexi Reetz (9-11) took a hard-luck loss, allowing just two earned runs in seven innings and striking out 11 batters. That gives Reetz 135 strikeouts on the season, which ranks third in program history. She now has 236 career strikeouts, which is fourth in program history.
The second game saw Lake Forest take the first lead in the top of the first, scoring an unearned run to take a 1-0 advantage. Ripon tied things up in the bottom of that frame on an RBI single by
Isabella Osborn, but that tie was short-lived as the Foresters hit a solo home run in the following inning, which was the first of three runs in the second. LFC extended their lead with a run in the third and capped the scoring with another in the sixth.
Ripon finished with seven hits, coming from seven different players. Lake Forest recorded 12 base knocks, led by Jillian Rashid's 3-for-4 performance. Rashid was one of four players with more than one hit in the game.
The Red Hawks will wrap up their 2017 campaign on Saturday when they'll play a doubleheader against Cornell College in Janesville, Wis. at the Janesville Softball Complex, beginning at 11 a.m.
