RIPON, Wis. - Ripon started Sunday's doubleheader on a high note, with a 9-8 walk-off win against St. Norbert, but the Red Hawks would lose the nightcap to the Green Knights by a 13-4 margin.
The Red Hawks (5-16, 4-4 MWC) never trailed in the day's first game, getting on the board with three runs in the first inning.
Hector Aguinaga drove in the first two runs with a double to left, followed by an RBI by
Nick Taranto. Ripon added two more runs in the third on a Taranto double, before St. Norbert finally got on the board with a three-run fifth.
Ripon got those three runs back in the sixth, which began with a lead-off home run by
Randy Finger.
Michael Barnes and
Josh Oswald each added an RBI single in that inning to take an 8-3 lead. St. Norbert then slowly cut into that lead, scoring three runs in the seventh, before tying the game at eight on a two-run homer by Robbie Dombrowski.
That set the stage for a dramatic ninth inning. After holding St. Norbert scoreless in the top of that frame, Barnes reached base on an error to lead off the bottom of the ninth. After Aguinaga drew a walk, Taranto singled to center and Barnes came around to score the game-winning run just before St. Norbert could apply the tag.
Both teams finished with 13 hits. Ripon was led by Barnes' 3-for-5 performance, while Oswald, Aguinaga, and Taranto each finished with two base knocks.
Ryan Maier (1-0) earned the win in relief, retiring the only batter he faced.
The second game saw St. Norbert jump out to an early lead, scoring one run in both the second and third inning. The Green Knights then broke the game wide open with a seven-run fourth inning before Ripon got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Oswald.
After St. Norbert scored another run in the top of the sixth, Ripon plated three runs in the bottom of that inning, scoring once on a single by Finger and twice more on a double by
Cameron Gruenwald. St. Norbert capped the scoring with a three-run ninth inning.
Ripon recorded 11 hits in game two, with three coming from Oswald and two coming from both Barnes and Gruenwald. St. Norbert collected 15 hits, led by Hunter Larson's four base knocks.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Tuesday when they'll play a single game against UW-Oshkosh. That game will begin at 4 p.m. at Francis Field in Ripon, Wis., with LiveStats available atÂ
