RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader against Beloit College Sunday afternoon in what was the Red Hawks' 2017 season finale. Beloit won the first game 10-4, before also taking the nightcap by a 9-5 margin.
The day got started with a wild first inning that saw a combined seven runs, six hits, and three errors. Beloit (17-17-1, 11-5-1 MWC) scored three runs in the top of the first, but Ripon answered with four runs in the bottom of that frame.
Josh Oswald drove in one of those runs via a sac fly, and
Riley Erickson gave the Red Hawks the lead with a two-run double to left center.
Ripon (9-26, 7-10 MWC) would play with that lead until the fourth inning when Beloit tied the score at four on an RBI groundout. The Buccaneers would then take the lead in the fifth, which featured six runs on four hits, including a pair of bases loaded walks and a two-run double.
Ripon finished the game with nine hits, with three apiece coming from
Isiah Ramos and
Randy Finger.
Ben Folger pitched 4.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two, but that was not enough.
The day's second game saw Ripon grab the initial lead when Erickson scored on a groundout in the bottom of the second. That lead lasted until the top of the fourth when Beloit scored their first two runs of the game.
Ripon took the lead again in the sixth, scoring three runs on three hits.
Robbie Schuettpelz singled in the tying run, while Ramos gave the Red Hawks the lead by driving in a run on a sacrifice bunt, before
Nick Taranto singled home another run.
One inning later, Beloit tied the score with a pair of runs, and they would take the lead with two more runs in the top of the eighth. Ripon added a run in the bottom of that inning on another RBI single by Taranto to cut the lead to 6-5, but a three-run ninth by Beloit would put the game on ice and secure the sweep for the Buccaneers.
Ripon finished with 13 hits, with three coming from both Schuettpelz and
Bennett Groves. Taranto, Erickson, and
David La Tour each added two base knocks.
