Big Second Half Helps Grinnell Run Past Red Hawks

GRINNELL, Iowa - After an entertaining first half in which there were six ties and nine lead changes, Ripon and Grinnell entered halftime tied at 48. That changed in the second half, as Grinnell outscored the Red Hawks 47-33 in the final 20 minutes to run away with a 95-81 victory.

Grinnell (8-3, 2-2 MWC) made 20 3-pointers in the game, shooting 41 percent (20-49) from behind the arc. Ripon (5-5, 2-3 MWC) didn't help themselves, as they turned the ball over 24 times, including 13 in the second half, while the Pioneers turned it over just 11 times in the game.

Ripon took an early eight-point lead on a 3-pointer by Tyler Semenas, but that lead vanished in an instant thanks to a 12-4 Grinnell run during the next two and a half minutes. Neither team led by more than four the rest of the half, with Ripon tying the score at the halftime buzzer on a putback dunk by Koy Brecklin.

Grinnell broke that tie on the first possession of the second half on a Vinny Curta 3-pointer to give the Pioneers a lead that they would never relinquish. A 3-pointer by Hannes Kogelnik gave Grinnell the game's first double digit lead with just over 16 minutes remaining. The Pioneers would lead by as many as 14 points, with Ripon getting no closer than eight the rest of the way.

Seth Kostroski led Ripon with a career-high 15 points on five 3-pointers. Kyle Rutkowski also scored a career-high with 13 points, while narrowly missing a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds. Cal Schultz and Brecklin chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively, while Trent Jones finished with 10 points, four rebounds, and a career-high seven assists. Ripon shot 60 percent (18-30) in the first half, but made 48 percent (14-29) of their second half shots.

Curta led all scorers with 27 points for Grinnell, to go along with a team-high seven assists. Ikaika Phillip added 14 points on 5-of-5 shooting, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range, while Kogelnik finished with 10 points in 14 minutes off the bench. Ten different Grinnell players made at least one 3-pointer in the game.

Ripon will try to rebound on Saturday when they return home to battle Lake Forest. That game will begin at 1 p.m. at Weiske Gymnasium in Ripon, and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
