RIPON, Wis. - Lake Forest's men's basketball team walked into Ripon's Weiske Gymnasium Saturday afternoon with a perfect 5-0 conference record, which placed them in a first-place tie atop the Midwest Conference standings. They walked out of the gym with their first blemish of the season, as Ripon defeated the Foresters 83-69 behind 52 percent shooting (30-58) from the field.
The game went back-and-forth early on, with the first half featuring nine ties and three lead changes.
Trent Jones kept Ripon (6-5, 3-3 MWC) in the game with 13 first-half points, making four of his first five shots, and scoring 10 of the team's first 15 points. Ripon took a four-point lead on an
Isaac Masters 3-pointer with one and a half minutes remaining in the opening period, but Lake Forest (9-4, 5-1 MWC) was able to cut that lead to three at the break.
Lake Forest's only lead of the second half came in the opening minutes when Danny Sotos made a jumper to give the Foresters a 37-36 advantage. That lead lasted 14 seconds, as Jones connected on a jumper on the ensuing possession to give the Red Hawks the lead for good. Ripon took their first double-digit lead of the game with just under three minutes remaining on a basket by Masters, which was part of a 12-3 run to put the game away.
Jones led all scorers with a career-high 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting, while also posting five rebounds and two steals. Masters also scored a career-high with 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting, to go along with four assists and two steals.
Cal Schultz and
Tyler Semenas added 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Lake Forest was led by 19 points apiece from Danny Sotos and Eric Porter. Jordan Moran added 10 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
With the win, Ripon moves into a four-way tie for fourth place in the MWC standings. The Red Hawks will be in action Friday when they'll travel to Monmouth College. That game will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Monmouth, Ill., and can be seen live atÂ
