RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's women's basketball team overcame a 14-point third quarter deficit to take a lead mid-way through the fourth quarter, but that lead would be short-lived, as UW-Platteville defeated the Red Hawks Tuesday night 60-53. Turnovers played a key role, with Ripon making 26 miscues, which resulted in 30 Pioneer points. UW-Platteville shot 34 percent (21-62) from the field, while Ripon converted 40 percent (18-45) of their shots, including 52 percent (11-21) in the second half.
Ripon (0-4) held an early lead after a trio of free throws, but that would quickly change, as UW-Platteville (1-2) scored the next 13 points to take command of the game. Ripon battled back to cut that lead to five later in the opening quarter. The Pioneers also outscored Ripon in the second period by a 13-11 margin to take a 32-22 lead into halftime.
Things began to get interesting in the third quarter after UW-Platteville scored a basket with five minutes on the clock to take a 14-point lead. Ripon scored the next seven points to cut that lead in half four minutes later, and would trail by six entering the fourth and final quarter.
Maggie Oimoen began that period with a three-point play to cut that lead in half, which was followed by consecutive baskets by
Alyassa Burgess,
Natalie Geiger, and
Laurissa Johnson to give Ripon their first lead since the opening minutes. UW-Platteville answered back with nine consecutive points to take a lead that they would never relinquish.
Oimoen finished the game with 12 points and 11 rebounds for her 10th career double-double, which is tied for the sixth-most in program history. Geiger added a career-high 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting, while Burgess tied a career-high of 10 points, to go along with five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Maiah Domask also registered a double-double for UW-Platteville, recording 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds (three offensive). Morgan Hortsman added 18 points and four rebounds, while coming up clutch at the free throw line, where she was 6-of-7.
Ripon will be in action again on Saturday when they'll travel to Carroll (Wis.) in what will be the Red Hawks' final of five non-conference games to begin the season. Saturday's game will begin at 1 p.m. in Waukesha, Wis., and can be seen live at
