Ripon Can't Get Past St. Norbert

DE PERE, Wis. - Ripon saw their three game winning streak against St. Norbert come to an end Saturday afternoon, as the Green Knights pulled away late for a 66-58 victory. The two teams were evenly matched for most of the day in a game that featured three ties and 15 lead changes.

Neither team led by more than five in the first seven minutes, until a Trent Jones 3-pointer put Ripon up by eight. The Red Hawks would take a double-digit lead on their next basket, a layup by Tyson Tully, and would lead by 12 on a Kyle Rutkowski basket with nine and a half minutes left in the first half. St. Norbert battled back with 11 consecutive points to cut Ripon's lead to one with three and a half minutes left before halftime. The two teams would head to the locker room tied at 29 after St. Norbert's Conner Curtis connected on a jumper in the final minute.

Joe Lemon gave St. Norbert their first lead since the opening minutes when he scored a basket on the opening possession of the second half. The lead would change hands 10 more times in the period, with the final one coming on another Curtis jumper to give SNC a 52-51 lead with six and a half minutes to play. That was part of a 16-7 St. Norbert run to end the game.

Jones led Ripon with 18 points, as he converted 3-of-7 shots from 3-point range. Cal Schultz added 11 points, eight rebounds, and four steals, while Rutkowski added 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field. Ripon outscored SNC in the paint by a 28-10 margin.

St. Norbert was led by Curtis' game-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds (four offensive). Jared Murphy added 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting off the bench, while Joe Ciriacks and Lemon scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Green Knights put the game away by shooting 93 percent (14-15) from the free throw line, including 92 percent (11-12) in the second half.

Ripon will try to rebound on Wednesday when they'll travel to UW-Stevens Point. That game will begin at 7 p.m. in Stevens Point, Wis., and can be seen live at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6AZy7ryl30.
