Red Hawks Drop Both Games of Doubleheader At #2 UW-Whitewater

WHITEWATER, Wis. - Ripon's baseball team squared off with arguably its toughest opponent of the season Friday afternoon, as they traveled to UW-Whitewater, which entered the game ranked second in the D3baseball.com Top 25 Poll. Despite scoring the first run of the opener, Ripon lost 15-3 in seven innings, before dropping the nightcap 11-5.

In the opening game of the day, Ripon (3-10) struck first with a run in the top of the first on an RBI single off the bat of Josh Oswald. After UW-Whitewater (8-2) scored three runs in the bottom of the first, including a lead-off home run, Ripon scored two more runs in the second on RBI hits by Eric Hietpas and Michael Barnes to tie the score at three.

UW-Whitewater then opened up the game with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the second. The Warhawks added two runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth to cap the scoring.

Ripon recorded seven hits in the game, led by Barnes, who went 2-for-3 at the dish. UW-Whitewater recorded 16 hits in the contest.

In the nightcap, UW-Whitewater got off to an early lead with one run in the first and two more in the second. Ripon tied things up with a three-run third inning on a two-run double by Oswald and an RBI double by Riley Erickson. That tie didn't last long, as UW-W took the lead for good with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third.

UW-Whitewater scored again in the fourth, but Ripon got that run back in the fifth on an RBI single from Nick Taranto. The Red Hawks added another run in the sixth when Tyler Nelson drove in a run with a single to right field, but it was not enough, as the Warhawks capped the scoring with three runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth.

Ripon out-hit UW-W 16-15, led by a 4-for-4 performance from Taranto. Hietpas also recorded four hits, while Oswald, Erickson, and Nelson finished with two hits apiece.

The Red Hawks will be in action again Wednesday when they'll host Carroll University for a single game at 1 p.m., which can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/, with LiveStats also available.
