Red Hawks Sweep St. Norbert Behind Pair of One-Run Games

RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's softball team won both games of Thursday's doubleheader against St. Norbert, winning both games by one run. The Red Hawks took the first game 3-2, before completing the sweep with a 4-3 victory in the nightcap to secure Ripon's first regular season sweep against St. Norbert since the 2006 season.

In game one, St. Norbert (6-12, 2-2 MWC) jumped on the board first with a run in the top of the first, which was led off with a triple by Brianna Braeger, who would later score on a groundout. The Green Knights doubled their lead in the third when Carley Frauenhoff delivered an RBI double to center field.

That lead lasted until the sixth inning when Ripon (11-15, 5-3 MWC) put a rally together to score three runs on two hits, while also assisted by a pair of St. Norbert errors. Micaela Encarnacion tied the score with a two-run single up the middle. Encarnacion would later score the go ahead run on a two-out error.

Lexi Reetz (9-6) earned the win, allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out two in her 11th complete game of the season. Ripon finished with nine hits, with Teara Morgenroth's 3-for-3 performance leading the way. Encarnacion added two hits and stole a base, in addition to her two RBI and one run scored.

The day's second game also saw Ripon score all of their runs in one inning. After St. Norbert broke a scoreless tie with a run-scoring groundout in the top of the third, Ripon batted around in the bottom of the inning, as all nine batters came to the plate, scoring four runs on six hits and one St. Norbert error. Reetz put Ripon in front with a bases loaded double to center that cleared the bases with one out. She would score one batter later on a single by Isabella Osborn and a throwing error by the Green Knights.

St. Norbert's other two runs came in the top of the seventh, both scoring on a two-out single to right center by Randi Morack, but the next batter was retired to complete the sweep.

Ripon finished with nine hits from eight different players. Encarnacion led the way with a 2-for-3 effort from the lead-off spot. Lilli Smith (2-2) earned the win, allowing just one earned run on five hits in 6.1 innings of work. Reetz came on in relief to pitch 0.2 innings for her first career save.

The wins put Ripon just two victories shy of last season's total, with 14 games scheduled to still be played in the regular season.
