RIPON, Wis. - In their final games of the season Sunday, Ripon lost both games of their doubleheader against Grinnell College, losing the first game 6-4, before falling 9-1 in game two.
Grinnell (23-10, 12-6 MWC) jumped on the board early in the first game, scoring on an RBI double in the opening inning. The Pioneers added a sac fly in the second inning, before Ripon (16-20, 10-8 MWC) tied things up with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, scoring on an RBI groundout and a bases loaded walk.
That lead lasted until the fourth inning when Grinnell managed four runs, scoring on a bases loaded walk of their own, a sac fly, and a two-run double. Ripon was able to get two of those runs back in the fifth when
Kayley Grabowski recorded an RBI single and
Julia Sanchez scored on a passed ball, but Ripon couldn't pull any closer than that two-run deficit.
Sanchez led Ripon's offensive attack with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, as the Red Hawks finished with six hits. Grinnell compiled seven hits in the contest, with four of those going for extra bases.
In the day's second game, Grinnell again jumped out to an early lead on Darice Wheeler's league-leading 17th home run of the season. The Pioneers added three more runs in the second, which included a two-run single by Wheeler. Grinnell scored twice more in the fourth , before Ripon got on the board with an RBI by
Lilli Smith in the fifth. Wheeler would get that run back with one swing of the bat, homering to straightaway centerfield in the sixth. The Pioneers would cap the scoring with a sac fly in the seventh.
Ripon finished the game with six hits, with two apiece coming from
Teara Morgenroth and
Brooke Bauer. The Red Hawks finish the season tied for the ninth-most wins in program history (16), while ranking sixth in school history for both single season hits (246) and fielding percentage (.948), and tied for sixth in doubles (37).
