Fond du Lac, Wis. - Five weeks after Ripon's baseball team topped Marian, the Red Hawks defeated the Sabres again, winning Wednesday by a score of 5-2 in a seven-inning rain-shortened game.
Ripon (10-18) scored first to take a lead that they would never relinquish, breaking a scoreless tie in the top of the second on an RBI double down the left field line by
Josh Oswald. Ripon doubled that lead in the third when
Nick Taranto singled to center to score
Tyler Nelson from third base.
The Red Hawks took a 5-0 lead in the fifth, which saw them score three runs on three hits and two errors.
Michael Barnes singled home one run, while Taranto added an RBI single of his own and
Hector Aguinaga connected on a run-scoring double.
Marian (15-20) would get on the board in the bottom of the fifth and add another in the seventh before the game was ended prematurely due to rain.
David Knapp (1-2) earned the win, allowing just one run on three hits and striking out four. Ripon finished with eight hits, coming from seven different players.
Nick Taranto led the way with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate, raising his season average to a team-best .433.
Ripon will be in action again on Saturday for their 2018 home finale, which will also double as Senior Day, honoring the team's five seniors. That doubleheader against St. Norbert will begin at Noon, and could have major implications on the race for a spot in the MWC Tournament.
