Turnovers Play Key Role In Loss At Grinnell

GRINNELL, Iowa - Ripon turned the ball over 22 times Saturday afternoon, leading to 31 Grinnell points, as the Red Hawks lost to the Pioneers 107-92. Grinnell, who committed just six turnovers on the day made 17 shots from 3-point range, shooting 35 percent (17-49) from behind the arc.

The two teams were locked in a see-saw battle early in the first half, as there were five ties and six lead changes during the first nine minutes. Grinnell (15-4, 11-2 MWC) then took control of the contest, taking a double-digit lead with seven minutes left in the opening period. Grinnell ended the half on a 37-22 run to take a 14-point lead into halftime.

The Pioneers continued to hold Ripon (11-7, 7-5 MWC) at arm's length in the second half. Ripon pulled within three points on a three-point play by Ryan Steffes with 14 and a half minutes remaining, but that's as close as they would get the rest of the day. The Pioneers extended their lead to 20 in the final minutes.

Ripon was led by Tully Tyson, who recorded career-highs of 32 points and nine rebounds on 13-of-16 shooting. Trent Jones added 26 points, while Steffes finished with 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Cal Schultz also chipped in with 13 points, six rebounds, and eight assists. The Red Hawks shot 52 percent (34-64) in the game, including 36 percent (5-14) from 3-point range.

Grinnell was led by Vinny Curta's 20 points, five rebounds, and six assists, while Patrick Simms added 18 points and six rebounds. Tyler Grumhaus, Hannes Kogelnik, and Jackson Qualley finished with 14, 12, and 10 points, respectively, all of whom came off the bench.

Ripon will try to put an end to their three-game skid on Wednesday when they'll return home to the friendly confines of Willmore Center to play Lake Forest College. That game will begin at 7:30 p.m., and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
