GRINNELL, Iowa - After seeing their seven-game win streak come to an end Friday night, Ripon's women's basketball team got back in the win column on Saturday with a 70-47 win at Grinnell. The Red Hawks never trailed in the game, shooting 50 percent (26-52) from the field, while holding Grinnell to just 28 percent (13-46) shooting.
The game was closely contested in the opening minutes, before Ripon (11-8, 10-2 MWC) used an 8-0 run to take a nine-point lead late in the first quarter. Grinnell (6-13, 4-9 MWC) managed to cut that lead to three in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but Ripon then scored seven consecutive points to take their first double-digit lead of the contest.
Entering the second half with a 38-25 lead, Ripon continued to pour it on after halftime, leading by double digits for the remainder of the game. The Red Hawks took their largest lead of 26 points on a pair of
Laurissa Johnson free throws in the final minute of the third quarter.
Ripon dominated down low all day, outscoring Grinnell in the paint by a 40-12 margin, while scoring 13 second-chance points. The Red Hawks also out-rebounded the Pioneers 46-29. Ripon was led by
Jesi Nay's 14 points, while
Skyylar Brescia posted career-highs of 12 points and 12 rebounds (five offensive) for her first career double-double.
Maggie Oimoen added 12 points in 16 minutes, making all six of her field goal attempts.
Grinnell was led by Sofia Ahooja's 14 points off the bench, while Tyria Heath added 13 points. Kate Tomzik chipped in with nine points, five rebounds, and four steals.
After Saturday's results, Ripon remains tied for first in the Midwest Conference standings. They will be in action again on Wednesday when they'll host Lake Forest College. That game will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Willmore Center in Ripon, and can be seen live atÂ
