SAINT PAUL, Minn. - One week after losing by seven points, the Ripon College football team was on the other end of a one-score game, defeating Macalester College 14-7. Ripon's defense limited the Scots to 255 yards of total offense, while holding them to just 80 yards rushing. The Red Hawks offense rolled up 301 rushing yards, en route to averaging nearly five yards per carry.
For the sixth time in their seven games, Ripon (2-5, 1-2 MWC) was the first team to score, as
Austin Bunders ran 30 yards for a touchdown with one and a half minutes to play in the first half. Macalester (3-4, 1-2 MWC) would tie things up in the third quarter on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Michael Nadeau to Peter Vitalis. That tie lasted until mid-way through the final quarter when Ripon took the ball 70 yards on 10 plays, capped off by an 11-yard touchdown run by quarterback
Cormac Madigan.
Bunders led Ripon's rushing attack with 118 yards on 18 carries (6.6 ypc), while Madigan added 73 yards on 19 carries.
Aaron Landry and
Tyler VanDeVelde added 52 and 45 yards on the ground, respectively. Ripon's defense was led by 10 tackles (two for a loss) by
Reece Schreckengust, who also recorded 0.5 sacks. The Red Hawks recorded a season-high four sacks, led by
Audie Ethington and
Lane Barnes, who recorded one apiece.
Cameron Gruenwald tallied the team's only interception.
Macalester was led by Kian Sohrabi's 48 yards on 11 carries. Nadeau completed 16-of-35 passes for 170 yards, while completing at least one pass to six different receivers. The Scots defense was led by Pierce Lundt's 11 tackles (five solo), while Nathan Gottlieb intercepted one pass.
Ripon will now try to build on this performance, as they'll return home next weekend to battle Beloit College on Ripon's annual Senior Day celebration at Ingalls Field. That game will begin at 1 p.m. and can be seen live atÂ
