PLYMOUTH, Wis. - Ripon's baseball team took a pair of games from Lakeland University Tuesday afternoon, winning the first game 4-1, before winning the nightcap 9-2. The Red Hawks never trailed in either game during the day.
The first game saw Ripon (15-12) jump on the board early with an RBI single by
Joey Garza in the top of the first inning, allowing
Riley Erickson to score. Lakeland (5-24) would tie the score in the third on a solo home run, but the Red Hawks grabbed the lead again in the fourth when
Keegan Johnston singled home
Nick Taranto. Ripon added a run in both the sixth and seventh inning on a steal of home by Garza and an RBI double from
Tyler Nelson, respectively.
The Red Hawks finished with 10 hits, coming from eight different players. Erickson and Taranto led the way with two hits apiece.
Andrew Kurcz (1-2) earned the victory, allowing one run on seven hits and striking out six in six innings of work.
Brody Marks pitched the final inning, allowing just one hit for his third save of the season.
Ripon began the second game much like the first, scoring a run in the top of the first on an RBI single by Garza. After Lakeland tied things up in the bottom of that inning, Ripon answered with three runs on three hits in the second, which was led off by a
Noah Herried single. He would score one batter later when
Jacob Pankratz belted his first career home run to left center field. Erickson added a sac fly later in that inning.
Herried added to Ripon's lead in the third with a bunt single that drove in one run. Taranto then crushed a two-run homer to left, his third of the season, in the seventh, before Erickson and
Michael Barnes each drove in a run in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Ripon finished with 16 hits, led by a 3-for-4 performance from Garza. Erickson, Barnes, Taranto, Herried, and
Nick Terrell each finished with two base knocks.
Kade Lancour (3-2) earned the win in relief, while starter
Alex Ostrowski allowed two runs on four hits and struck out two batters in 4.1 innings.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Thursday when they'll host Wisconsin Lutheran at 4 p.m. at Francis Field in Ripon.
