GALESBURG, Ill. - Ripon brought their 2019 season to a close Sunday afternoon, splitting a pair of games at Knox College. The Red Hawks lost the first game 5-4 in nine innings, before winning the second 5-4 on a walk-off single off the bat of
Isabella Osborn.
In the day's first game, Knox (6-32, 2-16 MWC) scored the first run in the top of the first, only to see that matched by the Red Hawks (10-26, 5-13 MWC) with a run in the bottom of the sixth on a sac fly from
Julia Sanchez to tie the score. After neither team scored in the seventh, the game headed to extra innings where Knox took the lead with a three-run homer in the top of the eighth. Ripon again answered in the bottom of that frame, as Sanchez hit a three-run homer of her own to send the game to the ninth, marking her third home run in the last two games. Knox would score the game's winning run in the top of the ninth on a two-out RBI single.
Ripon finished with nine hits, led by
Lexi Reetz's 3-for-5 performance.
Micaela Encarnacion and Osborn each finished with two hits. Sanchez's four RBI are tied for 10th in program history and gives her nine RBI in the last two games.
The day's second game began like the first with a Knox run in the top of the first. The Prairie Fire would add to that lead with three more runs in the fifth, and they would take that 4-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, setting the stage for a massive comeback by the Red Hawks.
Teara Morgenroth began Ripon's rally with a lead-off single, followed by another single from Hayley Rierson. Those two would later score on a single by
Emyli Kreiser to cut Knox's lead in half. Sachez then singled home Kreiser, before
Taylor Natzke tied the game with an RBI double. One batter later, Osborn played the role of hero with a walk-off single to score
Madison Campbell and win the game for the Red Hawks.
Ripon finished the game with 12 hits, led by
Claire Luebke's 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Kreiser, Sanchez, and Natzke each added two hits apiece.
The Red Hawks finish the season ranking sixth in program history with 39 doubles, while also tied for second in home runs (12).
