BELOIT, Wis. - Ripon's baseball team defeated Beloit 6-0 in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader to salvage a split with the Buccaneers after losing the first game 4-2.
The Red Hawks (6-10, 2-3 MWC) scored first in that first game, plating two runs on a double to right center by
Keegan Johnston in the fourth inning. Beloit (9-8, 1-1 MWC) cut that lead in half with an RBI single in the sixth, before taking the lead with two outs in the seventh on a three-run double, which proved to be the difference in the contest.
Ripon finished with five hits, led by a 2-for-3 effort from
Noah Herried.
Brice Swick (2-2) suffered the hard luck loss, allowing just one earned run in 7.1 innings of work, while striking out seven batters.
In the day's second game, Ripon again took an early lead with a pair of runs in the third, scoring on a sac fly by
Nick Taranto and a double steal, which scored
Nick Terrell. The Red Hawks added three runs in the sixth, which was led off by Johnston's team-leading third home run of the season. Taranto followed that up with a two-run double to left center later in that inning. They would cap the scoring in the ninth on an RBI single off the bat of
Riley Erickson.
Ripon finished with 11 hits, with three coming from Johnston, while Terrell and
Joey Garza added two apiece. Taranto led all players with three RBI, while Terrell scored a game-high two runs.
Kade Lancour (1-1) earned the victory with six shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out eight batters.
The Red Hawks will host this same Beloit team on Sunday in a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at Noon at Francis Field in Ripon.
