RIPON, Wis. - Ripon recorded their first shutout of the season Saturday with a thrilling 2-0 win against a very talented Carroll University squad, which hadn't lost since August. That marks the first shutout of Junior
Stefani Zeiger's career, as she played all 90 minutes between the pipes, making six saves.
Neither team scored in the first half, but Ripon (2-5-0) got on the board just a minute and a half into the second when
Jacie Verstegen netted her first goal of the season off a deflection by Carroll's Goal Keeper. That score held until the final seconds when
Paige Pierce found herself on a breakaway, finishing it off by scoring her fourth goal of the year with just four seconds remaining. That marks Pierce's 43rd career goal, which ranks fourth in program history.
Carroll (4-2-1) saw their Goal Keeper Christina O'Block record two saves in 90 minutes of work. The Pioneers also out-shot the Red Hawks 13-9.
Ripon will try to keep their momentum going Tuesday at UW-Whitewater in what will be their final tune-up before conference play, and will also be the fourth different state school they have played on their difficult schedule. Tuesday's game will begin at 7 p.m. in Whitewater, Wis.
