DE PERE, Wis. - Ripon's men's basketball team defeated conference leading and 19th-ranked St. Norbert College Saturday afternoon, 70-52, in a game the Red Hawks led from start to finish. That snaps the Green Knights 14-game winning streak, while handing them their first conference loss of the season, and marks Ripon's fourth win against SNC in their last seven meetings.
Ripon (10-7, 6-4 MWC) was locked in from the opening tip, making their first six shots of the game, while scoring the game's first eight points, en route to a 19-2 lead just six minutes into the contest. The Red Hawks shot 61 percent (14-23) in the first half, including 58 percent (7-12) from 3-point range, while St. Norbert (14-3, 9-1 MWC) converted just 31 percent (9-29) of their first half shots and 15 percent (2-13) of their 3-pointers.
After taking a 35-22 lead into halftime, Ripon continued to pour it on in the second half, going up by 16 on the first basket of the second half - a
Trent Jones 3-pointer. St. Norbert would cut that lead to seven with 12 minutes remaining, but that's as close as they would get the rest of the day. The Red Hawks would lead by as many as 21 points in the second half, while converting 92 percent (12-13) of their free throws on the day.
Jones led all scorers with 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting, while also recording eight rebounds, two assists, three steals, and two blocked shots.
Seth Kostroski and
Owen Theune each added 13 points, while
Ryan Steffes recorded nine points, four rebounds, and four assists.
St. Norbert was led by Jared Murphy's 13 points off the bench, while Connor Curtis added 11 points. Michael Payant also chipped in with 10 points in a reserve role.
Ripon will try to build on this performance Friday when they'll host Monmouth College. That game will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Willmore Center in Ripon, and can be seen live atÂ
