RIPON, Wis. - After sitting atop the Midwest Conference standings all season, the Ripon College women's basketball team now has some company, as Monmouth College defeated the Red Hawks 80-63 to move into a first-place tie. The Fighting Scots out-rebounded Ripon 45-28, marking just the third time the Red Hawks have been out-rebounded in their 18 games this season.
Ripon's only lead of the night came on the game's opening basket, a jumper by
Alyassa Burgess. Becca Gallis then put Monmouth in the lead with a 3-pointer, and the Fighting Scots would take a 24-16 lead into the second quarter. In that second frame, Ripon was able to cut that lead to three at halftime.
The second half saw Monmouth shoot 64 percent (16-25) from the field, outscoring Ripon 50-30 after halftime. Ripon converted 40 percent (23-57) of their shots in the game, including 39 percent (11-28) in the second half.
Freshman
Bonnie Jensen led the Red Hawks with a career-high 15 points, to go along with eight rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Fellow first-year player
Kiana Fall added 13 points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while
Skyylar Brescia scored 11 points in 15 minutes off the bench.
Monmouth was led by Carly Turnbull's 30 points, 13 of which came at the free throw line. Gallis added 21 points, including four 3-pointers, while Kaitlyn Osmulksi and Shayne Smith each scored 10 points.
Ripon will try to rebound on Saturday when they'll host Grinnell College at 3 p.m. in Willmore Center on what will be Ripon's annual Alumni Basketball Day. The women's alumni game will take place at 10:30 a.m.
