GRINNELL, Iowa - The Ripon College football team improved to 5-0 on the season for the first time since 2010 with a 52-8 victory at Grinnell College on Saturday. The Red Hawks gained 569 yards of total offense, including 417 yards on the ground on 13.9 yards per carry, while holding the Pioneers to just 239 total yards.
Ripon (5-0, 4-0 MWC) started the scoring mid-way through the opening quarter when quarterback
Jarrett Zibert found
Cormac Madigan for a 63-yard touchdown. Madigan would find the end zone again later in the quarter on a 79-yard run. After an
Erik Flores 40-yard field goal put the Red Hawks up 17-0 in the second period,
Masyn Ulrich added to that lead on a nine-yard TD reception from Zibert in the final minutes of the first half, giving Ripon a 24-0 halftime advantage.
The Red Hawks continued to pour it on in the second half, as
Connor Ramage got into the scoring action with a 66-yard run to paydirt.
Jaylend Brown would add a 13-yard TD run mid-way through the third quarter before Grinnell scored their only points of the contest on a 49-yard touchdown pass from Grays Woodhouse to Nick Rhinehart. Ripon would continue to add to their lead in the final quarter, which saw Madigan rumble for a 78-yard TD, his third score of over 60 yards in the game.
Jeremy Timmons capped the scoring in the final minutes with a 30-yard TD scamper.
Madigan finished the game with 161 yards on just four carries (40.2 ypc), while catching two passes for 65 yards, giving him 226 all-purpose yards. Ramage and Brown gained 76 and 75 yards on the ground, respectively, as each player averaged more than 10 yards per carry. Zibert completed 7-of-14 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, Ripon was led by
Damean Netzler's 13 tackles, which included a half sack.
Paxton Walker added 1.5 sacks, while
Brad Guell also had a sack.
Grinnell was led by Daniel Carter's 52 yards on 18 carries (2.9 ypc), while Woodhouse completed 14-of-25 passes for 175 yards. Adam Khater led the Pioneer defense with 10 tackles.
Ripon will try to keep things rolling next week at home against Lake Forest College, as the Red Hawks try to start the season 6-0 for the first time since 1995. That game will begin at 1 p.m. at Ingalls Field in Ripon, and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
