WOOSTER, Ohio - In a game featuring a pair of teams that each received votes in this year's D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25 poll, The College of Wooster defeated Ripon 83-71 Saturday night in the Championship Game of a tournament hosted by Wooster. The Red Hawks shot 46 percent (25-55) from the field in the game, including 35 percent (6-17) from 3-point range. Wooster finished the contest shooting 50 percent (30-60) from the field and 39 percent (10-26) from 3-point range.
Wooster (2-0) scored the first three points of the game and never trailed in the first half. They would build a 13-point advantage with five and a half minutes remaining in the half, but Ripon (2-1) battled back, ending the period on a 17-4, tying the score at 39 just before halftime on a jumper by
Ryan Steffes.
Ripon took their first lead of the game in the opening minutes of the second half when
Owen Theune scored on a jumper to put Ripon up 46-44. The Red Hawks' largest lead of eight came with just under eight minutes remaining when David DeValk connected on a jumper. Wooster then shifted into another gear, ending the game on a 23-3 run.
Theune led all players with 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting, as he and Steffes were each named to the All-Tournament Team. Steffes added 16 points and five rebounds in the contest, while
Drew Jorgensen chipped in with 11 points.
Wooster was led by Jamir Billings' 19 points, four rebounds, and eight assists, while Najee Hardaway scored 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Brandon Styers and Tayler McNeal each scored 15 points for Wooster.
Ripon will try to rebound on Tuesday when they'll return home to take on UW-La Crosse. That game will begin at 7 p.m. in Ripon, and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
