Ripon Salvages Split At Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. - Ripon's baseball team split a doubleheader at Carthage College Saturday afternoon, losing the first game 5-0, before earning a split with a 12-6 win in game two.

The first game of the day saw Carthage (1-1) limit the Red Hawks (2-5) to just two hits, with one apiece coming from Keegan Johnston and Evan Barbian. Hunter Thompson pitched well in relief, allowing just two hits in three scoreless innings. Carthage's main damage came in the fifth inning, which saw them score four runs to put the game out of reach.

Game two started much like game one, with Carthage taking a 4-0 lead into the fourth inning. That's when Ripon's bats came alive, as they scored once in the fourth on an RBI by Nick Latendresse, scoring Jake Pankratz from third base. The Red Hawks scored five more times the following inning on three more hits, all home runs. Owen Greene started the scoring in the inning with a solo homer to right, while Pankratz added a three-run shot to left center later in the frame. One batter later, Johnston deposited a pitch over the fence in right field to give Ripon a 6-4 lead.

The Red Hawks added four more runs the following inning, scoring on doubles from Greene and Nick Terrell, a bunt single by Zach Albrent, and on an error that allowed Andrew Betcher to cross the plate. They would add two more runs the following inning on RBI singles from Aaron Kurcz and Betcher to take a 12-4 advantage.

Ripon finished the game with 10 hits, led by three from Johnston. Greene added two base knocks and a pair of RBI. Ryan Cox earned the win on the mound allowing five earned runs and striking out one batter in 6.1 innings of work. Rex Bayer pitched well in relief, allowing just two hits in 2.2 scoreless innings.

The Red Hawks will be in action again Sunday when they'll travel to Aurora, Ill. to play a doubleheader against #21 Aurora University. The first game of that twinbill will begin at 1 p.m., with LiveStats available at https://athletics.aurora.edu/sidearmstats/baseball/summary.
