APPLETON, Wis. - Ripon's baseball team salvaged a split of Saturday's doubleheader at Lawrence University with a 10-6 game two victory. Lawrence took the first game by a score of 9-5.
Lawrence took control of the first game early, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second and plating another run in the third. Ripon would get on the board one inning later on a sac fly off the bat of
Nick Tenny, which allowed
Nick Terrell to score. The Red Hawks added another run the following inning on a fielder's choice, before pulling within a single run on a three-run home run by Terrell in the seventh, depositing the ball over the left field fence.
That would be as close as the game would get the rest of the way, with Lawrence getting some breathing room with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and another in the eighth.
Ripon's five runs came on just three hits. In addition to Terrell's two-hit day,
Jake Pankratz added one base knock.
The day's second game started much like the first, with Lawrence scoring three run in both the second and third inning. Unlike the first game, Ripon was able to complete the comeback in the nightcap, thanks in large part to a five-run fourth inning. In that frame,
Keegan Johnston connected on a three-run homer, in addition to an RBI double from
Andrew Betcher and another run scoring on a Lawrence fielding error.
Trailing by one, the Red Hawks took the lead with three more runs in the fifth. Pankratz led that inning off with a solo homer to left field, followed by a Terrell single and a run-scoring double off the bat of
Keegan Johnston to give Ripon the lead. Johnston then advanced to third on a balk and came home on a wild pitch. The Red Hawks would tack on two more insurance runs in the seventh on a two-run double from
Anthony Zak.
Ripon finished with 11 hits in game two, led by a 3-for-4 performance from Johnston, who also scored three runs and drove in four more. Pankratz and Betcher each recorded two hits, while Tenny, Terrell, Zak, and
Zach Albrent each added one hit.
Blaine Wahlen (1-0) earned the win in relief, allowing just one hit in five scoreless innings, while striking out five batters.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Tuesday when they'll host Beloit College in a doubleheader beginning at Noon. That twinbill can be seen live atÂ
