RIPON, Wis. - The last time Ripon's men's tennis team defeated St. Norbert College came in April of 2007. That changed Saturday afternoon, as Ripon defeated the Green Knights 7-2, nearly 14 years to the day after their last win against SNC. The Red Hawks won five of the six singles matches on the day, while winning two of the three doubles matches.
In doubles play,
Drew Jorgensen and
Marcus Austin teamed up at the number one flight to defeat the team of Andrew Gehring/Jayden Wartman by a score of 8-4. Ripon's number three team of
Preston Wurtz and
Vince Ireland was also victorious, defeating Josh Brown/Bryce Bertler, 8-0.
Jorgensen also won his singles match, defeating Wartman 6-4, 7-5 at the number one flight. Austin and Wurtz were also victorious at the number two and three flights, respectively. Austin defeated Gehring 6-3, 6-3, while Wurtz defeated Charlie Vandermillen 6-1, 6-2. Ireland also earned a team point for his victory at the number five flight, defeating Thomas Lokken 6-3, 2-6, 10-6.
Eugene Pliska also chipped in, winning his sixth-flight match 6-2, 6-2 against Joe Brown.
That win pulls Ripon (3-5, 1-2 MWC North) into a second-place tie in the Midwest Conference North Division with one match to play. Both teams play conference-leading and undefeated Lake Forest College on Sunday, with Ripon's match beginning at approximately 4 p.m. at Willmore Center in Ripon.
