BELOIT, Wis. - Ripon's baseball team won one of their two games Wednesday afternoon against Beloit College, who currently owns the best record in the Midwest Conference, with both of their conference losses coming at the hands of the Red Hawks.
Ripon rallied to win game one 11-6 after being tied at six after the sixth inning. The Red Hawks didn't waste any time, scoring three runs in the top of the first, which was led off with a
Nick Tenny double down the left field line. He would later score on a single up the middle from
Nick Terrell.
Keegan Johnston and
Nick Latendresse each drove in a run later in the inning. Ripon extended their lead in the third when
Jake Pankratz grounded out to the pitcher, which allowed Terrell to score from third.
Beloit would tie the score at four with a four-run third inning, but Ripon answered in the fifth on a two-run homer by Johnston, his fifth of the season and 11th of his career, to grab the lead once more. After Beloit scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at six, Ripon took the lead for good in the seventh when Johnston scored from third on a wild pitch. The Red Hawks would add to their lead later in the game on a two-run double by Terrell in the eighth and RBI singles from
Jimmy Woller and
Aaron Kurcz in the ninth.
Ripon out-hit the Buccaneers 16-6 in the game, led by three hits apiece from Terrell,
Owen Greene, and
Jake Cedar. Johnston added two hits, while he and Terrell each recorded a game-high three RBI.
Nathan Hopkins (1-0) earned his first career win on the mound, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, while allowing just one hit. Pankratz recorded his second save of the season, pitching two hitless innings to end the game.
The day's second game saw Beloit's Kaiya Nishino (3-0) pitch a complete game shutout, allowing eight Ripon hits, while striking out two. Beloit gave him all the run support he needed, scoring four times in the first and one more in the second, before adding four more runs later in the contest.
Ripon's eight hits came from six different players. Pankratz and
Evan Barbian led the way with two hits apiece.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Saturday when they'll travel to St. Norbert for a doubleheader beginning at Noon in De Pere, Wis. That game can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
