RIPON, Wis. - Adam Sellner '13 is one of the greatest throwers to ever put on a Ripon College Track & Field uniform. One of just two student-athletes in Ripon's men's program history to earn All-America honors more than once, Sellner accomplished that feat twice in the Hammer Throw, qualifying for the NCAA Division-III National Championships in each of those years and finishing sixth and seventh, respectively, in the Nation. Sellner was also a four-time conference champion in the Hammer Throw.
"Prior to my first MWC Championships meet, my throwing coach (former Ripon Discus National Champion) Mike Immel told me that I would eventually become Midwest Conference Performer of the Meet, which was confidence-inspiring," Sellner recalled. "At that point in my career, I had yet to even pick up a hammer in a competitive event, but he turned out to be right. Coach Immel was a amazing teacher during my career and remains a great friend to this day."
Coach Immel's premonition came to fruition four years later during Sellner's senior season. At the 2013 MWC Outdoor Championships, Sellner was indeed named Performer of the Meet after winning the Hammer Throw for the fourth consecutive season with a throw of 189-06. As impressive as that throw was, it still didn't travel farther than the previous season when Sellner set an MWC Championships record with a throw of 191-10, which still stands today. He also holds the Ripon College record in the Hammer Throw with a toss of 194-06, also coming in 2012.
"Adam first came to Ripon as an above average thrower, but he became a great college thrower by working extremely hard on his craft. He never cut corners and was regularly the last one to leave the practice field," former Ripon Track & Field Coach Bob Duley said. "With the support of Coach Immel, Adam became an excellent technician and a national-caliber thrower. Heading into any meet, small or large, Adam was an athlete our team could count on to earn big points."
A Business and Computer Science major from Barrington, Ill., Sellner was a three-time Academic All-American, achieving that feat in each of his final three years with the team.
"The four years that I spent at Ripon College were some of the most fun times I've ever had," Sellner said. "Between the friendships I made and the competition I experienced, I wouldn't trade it for anything."
Sellner currently owns The Gaming Co., a board and card game wholesaling operation in Kentucky, along with two retail stores. He is also the owner of Appleton Indoor Golf in Appleton, Wis. He currently resides in Columbia, S.C. with his wife Jill and their Airedale Terrier, Bogey.
