RIPON, Wis. - Despite controlling the game for much of the day and posting a shutout for the first 88 minutes of the contest, Ripon's men's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie after two overtimes Friday night. Westminster (Mo.) College out-shot the Red Hawks 17-7, including 11-2 in the second half, which saw the Blue Jays mount a comeback.
Ripon (1-3-1) broke a scoreless tie in the 27th minute when
Eli Dietzel went one-on-one with the goal keeper for his team-leading second goal of the season, thanks to assists by
Alex Casarez and
Jacob Oppeneer.
After taking a 1-0 lead into intermission, Ripon added another goal in the 82nd minute to double their lead. Westminster would get that goal back with just under two minutes to play, as Freddy Nene got the Blue Jays on the board. Thirty-four seconds later, the score was tied when Barrett Smith found the back of the net on a Penalty Kick to tie the game and send it into overtime. In the extra two frames, each team recorded two shots, but none would find the net.
Ripon's
Kalan Narance made diving save after diving save, posting 10 saves in 105 minutes.
Kenny Smith also made one save for the Red Hawks, playing the final five minutes of the game. Westminster (0-3-1) saw four saves from their Goal Keeper Conner Benefield, who played all 110 minutes between the pipes.
The Red Hawks will be in action again on Sunday when they'll host Illinois Tech at 3:30 p.m. in a game that will be preceded by Ripon's women's soccer home opener at 1 p.m. Both games can be seen live at
