RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's men's soccer team picked up their first win of the 2021 season Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory against Lakeland University in a game which the Red Hawks never trailed.
Ripon (1-2-0) broke a scoreless tie in the 33rd minute when
Eli Dietzel put the ball in the net on a Penalty Kick. The Red Hawks would double their lead five minutes later when
Jacob Oppeneer scored his first goal of the season, with assists credited to Dietzel and
Matthew Klopp on the play.
That score held up until there were seven and a half minutes remaining in regulation, as Lakeland (0-1-0) got on the board with a Michecadet Gethand goal, but that would be all the scoring the Muskies could muster.
Ripon Goal Keeper Kalen Narance played all 90 minutes in goal, making 11 saves, including a diving stop in the final minutes to preserve the victory. Lakeland's Zach Heiman also played the entire game between the pipes, saving three shots.
The Red Hawks will now try to use this momentum on Wednesday when they'll host Marian (Wis.) University at 4:30 p.m. at Prairie Field. That game will begin at 4:30 p.m., and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
