LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Ripon's men's basketball team remained undefeated in conference play Tuesday night with a 58-51 win at Lake Forest College. In a game that featured eight ties and seven lead changes, Ripon outscored the Foresters 15-0 in fast break points.
The two teams played evenly for much of the first half, with neither team leading by more than five points until Lake Forest (5-11, 4-3 MWC) took an 18-11 lead with nine minutes remaining before halftime. Ripon (10-5, 6-0 MWC) then scored the next 10 points to take a three-point lead on a jumper by
Jaylen Mahone. That lead lasted until the final minutes of the half when LFC took the lead on a 3-pointer by Rocco Ronzio, en route to a two-point halftime advantage.
That lead lasted eight minutes into the second half until a
Ryan Steffes jumper put the Red Hawks in front. After the teams traded baskets several times down the court, Ripon took control of the game thanks to an 11-0 run. LFC cut the lead to three with two minutes remaining, but that's as close as it would get the rest of the way.
Owen Theune led Ripon with his third career double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Steffes and David DeValk each added 10 points for the Red Hawks.
Lake Forest was led by Ronzio and Frank Siegien, who each finished with 14 points. Sean Espinosa added 11 points and a game-high four assists.
Ripon will try to keep things rolling on Saturday, when they'll travel to Grinnell College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. in Grinnell, Iowa, and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
