Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Ripon Suffers First Conference Loss of the Season

GRINNELL, Iowa - Nearly two full months into their conference season, Ripon's men's basketball team has finally lost a game, dropping a 101-87 decision at Grinnell College on Saturday. Grinnell's bench outscored Ripon's 51-26, while the Pioneers also scored 21 points off 16 Ripon turnovers.

Grinnell (10-6, 4-4 MWC) never trailed in the game, while also taking a double-digit lead mid-way through the first half. Ripon (10-5, 6-1 MWC) would close the gap to seven points, but the Pioneers ended the half on a 21-15 run to take a 13-point advantage into intermission.

Patrick Simsms started the second half with a 3-pointer for Grinnell to extend their lead to 16, but that would be cut to five just a few minutes later when a Dominic Galati 3-pointer capped a 15-4 run for the Red Hawks. That would be as close as Ripon would get the rest of the day, as Grinnell held them at arm's length the rest of the way.

Ripon shot 47 percent (33-71) in the game, including 38 percent (9-24) from 3-point range. They were led by Jaylen Mahone's 22 points and five rebounds off the bench, while David DeValk added his fourth career double-double of 17 points and 14 boards. Drew Jorgensen and Owen Theune each chipped in with 14 points, while Galati scored 11, which included a trio of 3-pointers.

Grinnell made 45 percent (32-71) of their shots on the day, including 37 percent (19-51) of their 3-pointers. The Pioneers were led by Simms' 20 points, while Adam Phillips added 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting from 3-point range. Dean Mazlish and Jackson Leone scored 14 and 12 points off the bench, respectively.

Ripon will try to rebound on Sunday when they'll travel to Illinois College. That game will begin at 3 p.m. in Jacksonville, Ill., and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
