RIPON, Wis. - Ripon's men's basketball team defeated Grinnell's high flying offense 81-70 Tuesday night, limiting the Pioneers to 32 points under their season scoring average. The Red Hawks shot 47 percent (28-60) from the field, including 40 percent (4-10) from 3-point range, while holding Grinnell to just 28 percent (25-85) shooting, including 28 percent (16-58) from 3-point range.
Ripon (8-5, 4-0 MWC) came out firing, scoring the first seven points of the game, including a pair of David DeValk buckets. Grinnell (6-6, 1-4 MWC) battled back to take their first lead of the game on an Adam Phillips 3-pointer to take a 17-14 advantage. That lead didn't last long, as
Ryan Steffes answered with a 3-pointer of his own for the Red Hawks, before a
Jaylen Mahone jumper gave them the lead, which they would hold for the remainder of the half.
Ripon continued to lead early in the second half, before Grinnell made one final run to tie the score at 46 with 15 minutes to play. That tie was short-lived, as
Owen Theune gave Ripon the lead again with a layup on the ensuing possession. The Red Hawks led by as many as 14 points during the second half, before coasting to victory.
Mahone led Ripon with a career-high 30 points on 10-of-13 shooting, while DeValk recorded his third career double-double with 21 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Steffes added 13 points and a career-high nine rebounds.
Grinnell was led by Phillips' 18 points on six 3-pointers, and four assists. Patrick Sims added 14 points, six rebounds, and four assists off the bench.
The Red Hawks will look to remain undefeated in conference play on Saturday when they'll travel to Illinois College. That game will begin at 1 p.m. in Jacksonville, Ill., and can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
