Volleyball Edged Out By Carroll

RIPON, Wis. – The Ripon College volleyball team lost a hard-fought 3-2 match to Carroll Tuesday evening.

Carroll improves to 12-13 on the season while the Red Hawks fall to 3-19.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-21, 18-25, 20-25, 8-15.

Ripon was led by Inesha Wiseman's 17 kills on a .264 attack percentage. Sophia Brinker notched 13 kills and hit an astounding .619 while Arynn Mathieu added 10 kills. Lydia Ellis chipped in eight kills in the loss.

Riley Nielsen registered a double-double with 37 assists and 20 digs. At the service line, Tayja Cornell and Bella Kasuboski each had three aces.

Defensively, Kasuboski, Mathieu and Thrasher added 18 digs apiece while Cornell chipped in 11 digs. At the net, Brinker totaled six blocks, including two of the solo variety.

The Red Hawks hit .112 for the match and totaled 99 digs.

Leading 18-16 in the first frame, Wiseman started a spurt with a kill. After an error by the visitors, Wiseman went back on the attack with another kill. Leading 22-18, Mathieu slammed home a pass from Nielsen. Cornell served up an ace, pushing the score to 24-18. Two plays later, a service error gave Ripon the set win.

Trailing 18-14 in the second stanza, Wiseman ended a 7-0 spurt with a kill. Down 19-15, Lydia Ellis notched a kill, which started a 6-0 run by the home team. Two straight errors by Carroll made it 19-18. Cornell served up an ace, knotting the contest. Back-to-back miscues gave Ripon a 21-19 edge. Mathieu's kill made it 22-20. Brinker recorded a solo block and a bad set pushed the margin to 24-20. Up 24-21, Brinker slammed home a pass from Nielsen for the 25-21 win.

After dropping the next two sets, Ripon jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fifth stanza. Brinker, Wiseman and Mathieu all had kills to get things going. Wiseman took a pass from Nielsen for a point, making it 6-2. Moments later, Wiseman went back on the attack for another kill and a 7-4 advantage. However, Carroll embarked on a 9-0 spurt for a 13-7 lead. The Red Hawks pulled within five at 13-8 but back-to-back points for Carroll ended the match.
