RIPON, Wis. - The Ripon College men's basketball team shut down UW-Oshkosh for the final 3 minutes of overtime to secure a 67-64 win over the visiting Titans Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Red Hawks looked to be heading towards an easy victory over an in-state rival after
David DeValk's jumper gave Ripon a 59-47 lead, but that would be the final points scored by Ripon in regulation.
Â
Despite the 7-plus minute scoring drought, Ripon led by 3, 59-56, with a minute to play. But a three-pointer by the Titans tied the game with 45 seconds left in regulation.
Jaylen Mahone tried to counter with a three of his own with the shot clock expiring, but it did not fall and gave UW-Oshkosh one final look that came up begging and the game went to overtime.
Â
The lead bounced back-and-forth for the first two minutes of overtime, but
Luke Meinholz hit a pair of free throws to put Ripon up 65-64. DeValk had a key lay-up a minute later to push the Red Hawk lead to 67-64, and Ripon's defense sealed the three-point victory.
Â
Ripon had seven scorers on the evening with DeValk's 14 points leading the way for the Red Hawks. Behind DeValk was Meinholz, who was perfect shooting on the night for his 12 points, and Mahone, who had 10 points.
