SAFORD, Fla. - Ripon's baseball team got their Spring Trip started right on Sunday, winning a pair of one-run games to earn a sweep of Worcester State. The Red Hawks won the first game 6-5, before taking game two by a score of 11-10.
After three scoreless innings of the first game, Ripon (2-2) broke into the scoring column when
Jake Pankratz scored on a Worcester error. The Red Hawks would add three more runs in the seventh on a
Brock Warren sac fly and a two-run single up the middle by
Samuel Ott. Worcester scored their first run in the bottom of the seventh, but Ripon added two much-needed insurance runs in the eighth, as
Cormac Madigan scored on a wild pitch and
Nick Tenny produced a sac fly. Worcester would make things interesting in the final frame, scoring four runs on five hits, but would leave two runners on base when the final out was recorded.
Warren (1-0) fired a gem in his first collegiate start, allowing four earned runs on seven hits, while striking out eight in eight innings of work. Ripon finished the game with nine hits, led by two apiece from Tenny, Madigan, and
Cam Stampfl.
After not trailing at all in game one, Ripon fell behind 5-0 after the top of the first in the second game. The Red Hawks would slowly, but surely climb back into the game after that, scoring once on a
Jake Cedar RBI single in the second, and three more times in the third on RBI from Warren, Ott, and
Jake Pankratz.
Both teams scored a run in the fourth, before Ripon took the lead with four runs on three hits in the fifth. They pushed across another run in the seventh when Tenny stole home, before Worcester tied the game at 10 with a four-spot in the top of the eighth. That set the stage for Ott's heroics in the bottom of the ninth, as he followed a one-out intentional walk to Warren with a walk-off single down the right field line to score Tenny with the winning run.
Pankratz (1-1) earned the win by pitching a hitless ninth inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced. Four of Ripon's 13 hits came off the bat of Terrell, while Tenny added three hits and each player scored three runs in the contest. Ott and Madigan also chipped in with two hits apiece.
Ripon will try to keep things rolling on Monday when they'll face Amherst College at 9:30 a.m. ET in Auburndale, Fla.
