Ripon Ends Season At 2022 MWC Tournament

MIDDLETON, Wis. - Ripon's men's tennis team closed out their 2022 season over the weekend as they took part in the annual Midwest Conference Singles and Doubles Tournaments. They finished the weekend with two consolation bracket championships, one each in singles and doubles play. The Red Hawks also came away with a ton of hardware from the weekend, winning the MWC's Sportsmanship Award, while Head Coach Steve Burns earned the conference's Coach of the Year award and Senior Preston Wurtz earned the prestigious Elite 20 Award.

In Saturday's singles tournament, Ripon saw four of the six players win their quarterfinal match. At number three singles, Wurtz defeated Monmouth's Sawyer Day 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, before bowing out in the semifinals, while Marcus Austin won his quarterfinal match at the number four flight, defeating Illinois College's Kyler Kantor 6-2, 6-0, before losing in the semifinals. Ty Rondestvedt and Jaden Francis would also win their quarterfinal match by scores of 6-3, 6-2 ad 6-0, 6-0, respectively, with each of them falling in the semifinal round. Calvin Battle also had success at the number two singles flight. After losing his quarterfinal match 1-6, 2-6, Battle won 8-2 in the consolation semifinals, before winning the consolation bracket with an 8-2 victory over Lawrence's Cam Strawn.

Sunday's doubles tournament also saw Ripon have some success, winning a pair of quarterfinal matches. At the number two flight, Rondestvedt and Francis teamed up to defeat Illinois College 8-1, before falling by an identical score in the semifinals. Battle also teamed up with Eugene Pliska to win their number three quarterfinal match 8-0 against Cornell, before losing by an identical score in the semifinals. At number one doubles, Marcus Austin teamed up with Drew Jorgensen. They would lose their quarterfinal match, but rebound to win in the consolation semifinals, 8-7 (4), before capturing the consolation championship with an 8-4 victory against Monmouth.

The Red Hawks finished this season with a 7-9 team record, which is their most wins in a season in 15 years. They also qualified for the MWC Team tournament for consecutive years for the first time since 2007.
