RIPON, Wis. - University of Chicago took a four-run lead after two innings Wednesday afternoon and never looked back, coasting to a 6-2 win over the Red Hawks, despite Ripon out-hitting the Maroons by an 11-8 margin.
Chicago (19-11, 14-5 MWC) got things started in the top of the first, scoring an unearned run on a sacrifice fly. They would add to their lead with three more runs in the second, scoring on an RBI single through the left side and on two more sac flies.
Ripon (14-15, 9-8 MWC) would make things interesting in the middle innings, getting on the board in the fourth on an RBI single off the bat of
Jake Pankratz, which scored
Samuel Ott, who would add an RBI double to center the very next inning.
That would be as close as Ripon would get the rest of the day, with Chicago adding two insurance runs in the seventh and eighth inning, scoring on a throwing error and a single to left, respectively.
Cam Stampfl led Ripon's offense with three hits, while Ott and Pankratz each finished with two.
Mau Huesca Villegas pitched well in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out one, while walking just one batter in four innings of work.
The Red Hawks will try to rebound on Saturday when they'll host Grinnell College in a doubleheader at Noon at Francis Field in Ripon. Those games can be seen live at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/ripon/.
